The Ins and Outs of Gainesville's School
Before you choose one of the many apartments for rent in Gainesville, FL, you've got to know a little bit about the local schools. Whether you're a student or the parent of one, you want to make sure your new apartment fits in with your educational plans! Gainesville is most famous for being the home of the University of Florida. (That's why so many apartments around Gainesville cater to college students!) With nearly 50,000 students, over 100 undergraduate majors, and 200 different graduate degrees, UF is one of the biggest -- and most diverse -- universities in the country.
But what if you're not interested in going to college for four years? Are there any other options in town?
Gainesville is also home to Santa Fe College, a public college that offers two-year degrees, four-year degrees, career and technical certificates, and continuing education programs. While it doesn't have as many students as UF does, it still has more than most other schools -- with a total of 15,800 students enrolled in 2013. As an added benefit, Santa Fe is a great option for students who want to be Gators -- but aren't ready to enroll at UF just yet. In fact, Santa Fe sends more transfer students to UF than any other college.
OK, so what if you have kids who aren't ready for college just yet?
Alachua County Public Schools serve the Gainesville area. This school district is home to two dozen elementary schools, nine middle schools, and seven high schools. If your child has a particular passion, you'll be happy to hear that there are a variety of magnet programs available in this district that cover everything from fine arts to math and science. And, as your kids get older, they can apply for magnet programs that focus on a specific career path -- like culinary arts, criminal justice, and automotive technology. If your Gainesville apartment sits in the designated area for Buchholtz High School -- the city's largest high school -- don't panic. Even though it has more than 3,000 students, Buchholtz is frequently recognized for academic excellence. In fact, back in 2008, Newsweek named it one of the best high schools in the country!
But what if you want your kids to go to private school?
Gainesville is home to a number of private schools. Some have students from Pre-Kindergarten all the way through 12th grade, so if you find one you really like, you may be able to stick with it for the long haul. While several of Gainesville's private schools have a specific religious affiliation, you'll also find several that are non-denominational. So, whether you've got teeny-tiny kids or a troop of teenagers, you can rest easy knowing that they'll be able to get all the education they want -- without ever leaving Gainesville!
